This pledge is for candidates registered to run for elected office in Manitoba municipal elections in October 2026.
Manitoba municipalities have some of the lowest per-capita transit funding levels in the country. The Province used to match municipal investments in transit through the 50-50 funding agreement, but this was ended in 2017 and provincial transit funding has been frozen since. Ridership and fare revenue have also declined in Winnipeg in recent years.
Restoring and growing public transit investment is essential to build strong, accessible transit networks in Manitoba. Both the Province and municipalities have a key role to play in sufficiently funding public transit, to put more buses on the roads and improve service. Moreover, increased operational funding will afford Manitoba municipalities the capacity to capture federal capital investment dollars that are currently on the table to expand their transit systems.
Ahead of the 2026 municipal elections, the Next Stop: 50-50 campaign is inviting candidates to pledge their support for public transit by agreeing to the commitments below, and filling in the form on the right of this page.
Municipal Candidates Pledge
In taking this pledge, I agree to fight for better public transit if elected to municipal office. In particular, I pledge to:
- Strongly advocate for transit funding at the municipal level, with the aim of increasing spending on transit operations by at least 25% by 2030.
- Advocate to the Province for matching transit funding through restoration of the 50-50 funding agreement.
- Attend a community assembly on transit after the election to share my plans for championing better transit while in office.
